Ross Lam

Ross Lam is a FIDE Candidate Master and experienced chess coach based in Brisbane, who has been playing and teaching chess for over 20 years.

He has competed in tournaments across Australia and overseas, and finished equal first in the 2020 Australian Reserves in Sydney, competing against a field of 108 players.

Ross founded and ran the Sunnybank Chess Club from 2012 to 2020, building a much-loved chess community with around 100 students attending weekly coaching sessions. The club offered junior group coaching and tournaments, and won the 2017 Brisbane Junior Chess Interclub Competition.

Ross has also been recognised by the Chess Association of Queensland for his contribution to junior chess.

Today, Ross continues to coach players of different ages and abilities, from young children through to adults. He has taught chess to students ranging in age from 3 to 101, adapting his approach to suit each student’s age, abilities and goals. His coaching focuses on clear explanations, practical improvement and enjoying the game. Ross holds a Blue Card and NDIS Worker Screening Check.

Outside of chess, Ross enjoys playing bughouse chess (a fast-paced chess variant), keeping active through badminton and running, and being involved in his local church.

The way you ran things was very special. It makes it so easy for me to encourage anyone to send their kids along — a vital part of our kids’ skill development.
